“Symbols do not flow from the unconscious to tell
us what we already know, but to show us what we have
yet to learn.”—Robert A. Johnson, We
The aim of this workshop is to bring together people
who are interested in exploring and opening a dialog
with their creative inner selves. We use guided meditation
to enter your inner world, bring forth those discoveries
onto paper using charcoal, then discuss our imagery
with the group. This process teaches you to yield—to
open to your unique creative authentic self.
The drawings are visual symbols of our inner journeys
to be looked at and learned from in the same manner
that we learn from our dreams. Dreams are scenes from
the subconscious which you observe as if from a seat
in the audience. Meditation, as we are using it here,
puts you in the director’s seat. You are in total
control of which images you choose to focus on. The
meditation puts you in a place of receptivity. Paying
attention puts you in a place of conscious awareness.
After the guided meditation and before we speak and
re-enter our public selves, we will draw with charcoal
on newsprint something of what we saw, heard or felt.
Just like writing down a dream to later analyze, think
about or reflect upon, we draw down our experience as
visual symbol to later reflect upon or transpose into
color as art work. Because we only use one color—black,
we avoid alot of decision making. No color choices—no
confusion—just the flow of information or experience
through our hands onto paper.
After drawing, we discuss our imagery with the group.
Once you become comfortable with your inner world and
familiar with how you express that world, and how others
respond to your expressions, you will come to a place
of trust—trust in others and trust in yourself.
The energy and interplay of the individuals in a group
is what enables us to gather the courage and trust ourselves
to reach beyond where we are now or where we think we
are capable of going. Therein lies the transformational
quality of this workshop.
